Your business is not likely to survive an uninsured cyber attack. The odds are against you that you will avoid this risk forever. The number of reported attacks are up 33% from same quarter last year.

While the intriguing cyber attacks orchestrated by international hacking group Anonymous seem more inclined to grab headlines, your company can easily be damaged by the rising number of malicious attacks being generated from bad guys holed up anywhere in the world. If you have not done important research in how to protect and insure your business against cyber attacks, including denial of service attacks, let the results of a new survey jolt you into action.

According to a survey released today by Prolexic Technologies and reported by Business Insurance magazine, the number of cyber attacks resulting in denial of service (DoS) for businesses increased sharply during the second quarter of this year.

DoS are generally efforts to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the internet. Cyber attacks can be much more extensive and include a breach of privacy and access to your most proprietary and sensitive business information. Most companies are severely exposed and not properly insured  for these risks.

Business Insurance reports, “The Hollywood, Fla.-based provider of distributed denial of service protection services (Prolexic Technologies), said in the report that there was a 33% increase in total number of distributed denial of service attacks in second quarter 2013 as compared to the same quarter a year ago. The report also showed that the duration and intensity of attacks is increasing substantially. The average duration of attacks in second quarter 2013 is 34.5 hours, compared to 17 hours in second quarter 2014.

According to the Prolexic report, companies that continue to be most heavily targeted include leading brands in retail, health care, high tech, media and telecom, and travel.
